At first glance this news might not seem like its about information security, but it absolutely is. It’s about how a police issued ID card was used by a civilian no longer employed by the police, to try and stop a lone woman who was driving along a motorway.
It highlights why it’s so important to keep a register of information and associated assets, and to have clear procedures for issuing and returning them. As a result two police forces have suffered reputational damage. Leicestershire and Northamptonshire police due to separate botched investigations caused because the ID card wasn’t returned; Northamptonshire police because one of their suppliers’ information security procedures wasn't working.
